Clinical Results of Black Diaphragm Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Implantation in Aniridia

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: To examine the clinical results of the implantation of black diaphragm posterior chamber intraocular lens in eyes with aniridia.
Methods: Morcherⓡ black diaphragm aniridia IOL (67 G) (Morcher GmbH, Germany) were inserted into 11 eyes with aniridia and a retrospective chart analysis was performed. Seven of these patients were aphakic eyes. Six (the group A) occurred secondarily following the trauma and the remaining one (the group B) did because of the complications following the cataract surgery. Of the remaining four eyes, two had a concurrent presence of iridodialysis and subluxation of lens due to the trauma (the group C) and another two did a concurrent presence of congenital cataract and aniridia (the group D). The postoperative visual acuity, intraocular pressure, presentation of glare and epiphora, the postoperative location of IOL, the occurrence of inflammation and complications were evaluated.
Results: The sclera fixation of IOL was done in the groups A and C, was done into the sulcus insertion in the group B, and into the bag in the group D. At a postoperative follow-up, the valve implantation was performed due to the glaucoma in two eyes and the partial pars plana vitrectomy was performed due to the development of retinal detachment in one eyes. In most cases, glare and epiphora were improved and favorable visual prognosis was resulted.
Conclusions: Black diaphragm IOLs implantation in eyes with aniridia might provide the satisfactory results. However, a careful observation and treatment are needed for the complications. This must be fully explained to and consented by patients.
